Here’s my solution to this problem: this is why we have peer review. Average guys with websites can do a lot of amazing things. One thing they cannot do is reveal statistical manipulation in climate-change studies that require a PhD in a related field to understand. So for the time being, my response to any and all further ‘smoking gun’ claims begins with: show me the peer-reviewed journal article demonstrating the error here. Otherwise, you’re a crank and this is not a story.

So the problem is…
Can we determine from the given distribution produce by the triangle configuration what pegs of the triangle configuration are in the wrong place, assuming that the error is on the positioning of the pegs where the balls collide?

I think this should be solvable. But I also think is a really hard problem! Anyone care to solve it?

This morning Matt Mullenweg announced on his blog that WordPress.com has enabled posting and reading blogs via the Twitter API. Now any Twitter app that supports a custom API URL (Tweetie is one such) can be used to either post updates to a WordPress.com blog, or to read updates from blogs to which one has subscribed. Dave Winer calls the move by Automattic, WordPress.com’s parent company, “deeply insidious,” and notes that 10 years ago he did a similar thing in his Manila blogging platform when the Blogger API came out. Winer opines that Automattic’s move has made the Twitter API into an open standard, due to WordPress.com’s large base. Winer notes (in a comment on the above-linked post), “The fun starts if they [WordPress] relax some of the limits of the Twitter API and fix some of the glaring problems.”

Google has handed out a new mobile phone running its Android software to some employees, stirring another wave of speculation that the oft-rumored Google Phone is real. In a blog post on Saturday morning, Google said the phones are being distributed so that workers can experiment with new mobile features. It did not say the device will be a Google-branded phone. Since even before Google unveiled Android, onlookers have wondered whether the search giant will release its own phone. Instead, it released an open source operating system that other hardware vendors can use to make phones.

The Development of Sage

Sage is a project to create a viable free open source alternative to Magma, Maple, Mathematica and Matlab. The lead developer/manager William Stein has recently written Mathematical Software and Me: A Very Personal Recollection, a rather enjoyable story of his experience with mathematical software, especially Magma, and how Sage came to be.

One of the difficulties of writing broadly useful math software is the sheer size and scope of such a project. It is easily outside the abilities of even the most prodigious lone developer. So the focus of Sage, at least up until recently, has been on creating Python-based interfaces to existing mathematical software. For example, for symbolic calculation the Sage distribution includes Maxima (written in Common Lisp), a fork of Macsyma dating back to the early 1980s, and released as open-source software by the US Department of Energy approximately 10 years ago. In addition to Maxima, Sage includes the ability to call out to Magma, Mathematica, and Maple.

Another important thing to note is that this configuration would pass all requests through the monorail module which obviously will be less-than-optimal for static content. You can read more about implementing a best practice to handle this here . Basically, you are just setting up another website with stripped down handler mappings either on IIS or some faster server to deliver static content. I have loved separating this kind of stuff out of my web projects as it lets me centralize all the common scripts/images AND speed up my sites.

Unity CEO David Helgason announced the changed terms today during the Unite Nordic trade conference, according to Pocket Gamer's Keith Andrew. The dropping of licensing fees for the engine's basic tier means that features which once cost $800 now carry no charge at all.

Decoding Larry Page: How Google Is Staking Out The Future Of Innovation

“We are only at 1% of what is possible.” ~ Google CEO Larry Page

Page is right. Even though it seems like we get a breakthrough new technology every year, we are really just scratching the surface. But what does that really mean? If we have achieved only 1% of what is technologically possible, Google is setting itself up to be the company that fills in the other 99%.

Just look at the Google I/O keynote Wednesday morning in San Francisco. The company had so many aspects of its product portfolio to announce that it took three hours to work through it all. And that was before Page hit the stage and turned all philosophical:

I think we're all here because we share a deep sense of optimisim about the potential for technology to improve people's lives and the world.

Google Owns The Second Half Of The Chess Board

At a conference in Boston last week Andrew McAfee, a Principal Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, related a story about the pace of innovation that directly speaks to Page’s notion. McAfee recounted how the inventor of chess introduced the game to the emperor of India. The emperor was so impressed with the game's combination of simplicity and complexity, depth and vision, that he told the inventor he could have any gift he could imagine.

The inventor asked for a grain of rice, doubled for each square on the chess board. On the first square he would get a single grain of rice, on the second square he would get two, on the third he would get four grains, and so on. The request seemed fairly humble to the emperor and he granted it.

What the emperor did not realize, of course, is that if you keep doubling a number, it doesn't take long for for the figures to get really, really big. If the emperor had delivered all the rice he agreed to, the pile would have been bigger than Mount Everest.

McAfee linked this story to Moore’s Law (which holds that number of transistors on an integrated circuit doubles approximately every two years) and the explosion of data created by humans, rapidly approaching the mind-numbingly large “yotta” byte. Between Big Data and Moore’s Law, McAfee said, we have entered the second half of the chessboard of innovation.

Google's Mountain Of Rice

In this case, though, Google is both the inventor and the emperor. Just like chess, Google’s portfolio of products is deceptively simple but utterly complex. And the company is well positioned to turn that portfolio into a truly epic mountain of rice.

Rice, in this case, could mean data. Or money. Or better yet, innovation.

Who is going to challenge Google’s core products? Yahoo and Microsoft can't come close to what Google has done with the knowledge graph and voice search. Android is forging ahead of iOS around the world. Chrome is one of the simplest but most sophisticated browsers on the planet. And the company's search ad products just keep cranking out the profits that pay for the company's push in to new areas.

Larry Page Doesn't Think Competition Is Interesting

Yet the individual products seem almost incidental to Page's quest for innovation. Towards the end of the keynote, he harped on the technology industry for holding back the pace of innovation with lawsuits, data hoarding and stifling cross-platform integration:

You know we haven't seen this rate of change in computing for a long time. Probably not since the birth of personal computing... [but] despite the faster change in the industry, we're still moving slow relative to the opportunities we have.

If Page had his way, Google would not be playing chess against it competitors, but working with them to create even more rice:

You know every story I read about Google is sort of us vs. some other company, or some stupid thing, and I just don't find that very interesting. We should be building great things that don't exist. Most important things are not zero-sum. There's a lot of opportunity out there. We can use technology to make really new and really important things to make people's lives better.

Business, of course, doesn’t typically work that way. Google has to exist within a whirlwind of quarterly earnings statements and antitrust lawsuits, litigation and corporate development. Given all that, it's amazing that Google is able to do all that it does, pushing the boundaries of technology every year. If Page is right, and we are truly just at 1% of what technology is capable of, someone has to lead the way into the remaining 99%. And despite Page's protestations, no one is better positioned than Google to do just that.

Gmail at Nine: The Evolution of an Essential Web Service

In 2004, when Google introduced Gmail, it wasn’t instantly obvious to everyone why the search engine phenom would want to get into the e-mail business. Actually, given that the company made its announcement on April 1, some people wondered, momentarily, whether the news was a hoax. Even once it was clear that Gmail was the real deal, Google felt the need, in the Gmail FAQ, to answer the burning question “Why is Google offering email? I thought you were a search company.” The era of people being confused by Gmail was so brief that it’s easy to forget such an era ever existed. Gmail quickly became not just one of Google’s core services but one of the web’s core services — the webmail client that came to define webmail clients even though it was far from the first one. Like most things Google does, Gmail hasn’t been without its controversies, but it’s still one of the company’s great success stories. I recently chatted with Alex Gawley, the service’s product manager, about Gmail’s first nine years — and a little bit about where it might be going. First, to refresh your memory, here’s an infographic-based history of Gmail that Google distributed last month, complete with major milestones such as 2010′s Priority Inbox, probably Gmail’s biggest innovation since the ones that got it started: Google One of the reasons Gmail took the web by surprise was that it wasn’t necessarily obvious that web-based mail was ripe for reinvention. Nine years ago, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail were good, popular and deeply entrenched; they seemed to have the market as it existed all sewn up. Gmail shattered that assumption because it was the first major web-based e-mail that aspired to be good enough to be someone’s primary inbox. “From the very start, [Gmail] was about pushing the boundaries of what an e-mail product might be for people,” Gawley says. “Back in 2004, most webmail providers were giving people a few megabytes of storage. They were thought of as this interesting quirk. A gigabyte of

Gun control is control of all guns. This tautology, in a developed society, is non-negotiable. If guns can exist in our country, then gun plans can exist, and, although I'm firmly on the side of draconian control over most weapons, I find the move to ban Defense Distributed's plans for their Liberator pistol unconscionable.
